The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down President Donald Trump’s executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship, preserving a constitutional guarantee that has stood for more than a century.
According to a report by The New York Times, the case, Trump’s effort to end birthright citizenship as it has been understood for more than a century, invalidating an executive order that was a key part of the president’s agenda even though it was legally dubious from the start. The ruling stemmed from Trump v. Barbara, which challenged Executive Order 14160, signed on Trump’s first day in office.
Challengers had pointed to the 1898 case US v. Wong Kim Ark, in which the court read the 14th Amendment to grant citizenship to children of noncitizen parents born on US soil.
