Texas makes Bible required reading in public schools. Is Florida next?

Florida education officials have indicated they may be open to policies similar to Texas’ newly approved public school reading requirements that include selected Bible passages.

Bible in Schools Debate

A fresh debate over religion in public education is brewing after Texas approved Bible passages as required reading for public school students, with Florida signalling it could consider similar measures, according to the Miami Herald.

The Texas State Board of Education last week approved a mandatory reading list including Bible stories and excerpts alongside literature and historical American texts, affecting elementary, middle and high school students from the 2030-31 school year.

Florida education officials said familiarity with the Bible can help students understand ideas that influenced America’s Founding Fathers, though the state has no comparable requirement yet. Florida has recently backed prayer rights measures, while Texas requires Ten Commandments displays in schools.
