Meta pulls Instagram AI image feature after days of backlash

Meta has paused its new Instagram AI image-generation feature after widespread criticism over consent and privacy, following backlash from users, Hollywood agencies, and unions.

Meta Pulls AI Image Tool After Backlash

It lasted just three days. According to the New York Times, Meta launched an AI feature on Instagram Tuesday letting users generate images based on people’s public accounts — automatically opting in anyone with a public profile. The backlash was swift, with users citing privacy and copyright concerns.

Meta pulled the feature Friday, saying it “missed the mark.” Creative Artists Agency called it irresponsible, while SAG-AFTRA branded the opt-in approach “an utter miscalculation of public sentiment.”

The tool was part of Meta’s broader Muse Image launch, which remains active on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app. Other Instagram AI filters from the same rollout are still available. Meta plans to release an AI video generator in the coming months.
