A new poll shows Democrat James Talarico narrowly ahead of Republican Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race, with slipping GOP support among Hispanic voters raising alarm bells for Republicans.
Texas Poll Has Republicans Worried As Talarico Leads Paxton
Texas Republicans have a new headache. A Fox News poll of 1,006 registered voters, conducted by Beacon Research and Shaw & Company Research between July 23 and 27, shows Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico edging out Republican Ken Paxton, 51% to 48%, VOZ reports.
It’s within the margin of error, but the numbers sting in a state Donald Trump won by nearly 14 points in 2024. Paxton, Texas’s attorney general, hasn’t fully united Republicans behind him, despite Trump’s primary endorsement over Senator John Cornyn.
Talarico pulls almost unanimous Democratic support (98%) and 68% of independents. Paxton’s Republican backing sits weaker at 89%, with a quarter of non-Trumpist Republicans leaning toward Talarico.
Among the most engaged voters, Talarico’s lead widens to six points, a troubling enthusiasm gap for the GOP heading into the midterms.
