The White House deleted a video from President Trump’s social media that depicted the Obamas as apes, citing a staff error following intense bipartisan condemnation.
President Donald Trump’s social media account deleted a controversial video Friday following a wave of condemnation from both Democrats and high-ranking Republicans. The footage, which promoted 2020 election conspiracy theories, featured a brief segment depicting former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama as primates. While the White House initially dismissed the backlash as “fake outrage,” the post was later scrubbed.
The video drew a rare, public rebuke from Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.), a prominent Trump ally and the Senate’s sole Black Republican. “Praying it was fake because it’s the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House,” Scott stated on X, demanding its removal. Republican Senators Roger Wicker and Pete Ricketts joined the call, describing the imagery as “unacceptable” and “blatantly racist.”
The White House eventually blamed the post on a junior staffer, claiming the president had not seen the content before it was shared. “A White House staffer erroneously made the post. It has been taken down,” an official told reporters. Despite the deletion, Democratic leaders like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries continued to blast the incident, calling the imagery a “disgusting” display of bigotry.
