Iran’s President and speaker seek removal of Foreign Minister over IRGC ties

Iran’s president and parliament speaker are pushing to oust Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for allegedly sidelining the government to follow the directives of the Revolutionary Guard in nuclear negotiations.

President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf are reportedly seeking the removal of Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, accusing him of bypassing executive authority to follow the direct instructions of Revolutionary Guard Commander Ahmad Vahidi during nuclear negotiations. Sources familiar with the matter told Iran International that Pezeshkian is deeply dissatisfied with Araghchi acting more as an aide to the military than a cabinet minister, warning he will dismiss the diplomat if this coordination continues.

This internal rift follows reports that Vahidi has asserted control over “all key and sensitive managerial posts” due to wartime conditions, effectively placing the presidency in a “complete political deadlock” and stripping Pezeshkian of the authority to appoint officials. The power struggle coincides with the collapse of negotiating efforts in Islamabad, where Araghchi attempted to lead talks following Ghalibaf’s alleged resignation from the delegation after being reprimanded for his handling of nuclear issues.
