South Carolina Supreme Court overturns Alex Murdaugh’s murder convictions

The South Carolina Supreme Court has unanimously overturned Alex Murdaugh’s double murder convictions and ordered a new trial, ruling that a county clerk improperly influenced the jury.

According to CNN, the South Carolina Supreme Court has overturned Alex Murdaugh’s murder convictions in a unanimous 5-0 ruling, ordering a new trial in the 2021 killings of his wife Maggie and son Paul.

The court ruled the trial was tainted by former county clerk Becky Hill, who made improper comments to jurors, including telling them to “watch his body language,” implying Murdaugh’s guilt.

The justices wrote: “Although we are aware of the time, money, and effort expended for this lengthy trial, we have no choice but to reverse the denial of Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial due to Hill’s improper external influences on the jury.”

Murdaugh, 57, was convicted in March 2023 and received two life sentences. Hill pleaded guilty to perjury and obstruction charges in December 2025 and received three years of probation.
