Former Vice President Kamala Harris condemned a Supreme Court ruling on Black-majority districts, accusing Republicans of using gerrymandering to “cheat” and calling for potential court reform.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris has fiercely criticized a Supreme Court decision allowing states to dismantle Black-majority congressional districts, according to The Independent.
Speaking to the nonprofit Emerge, Harris accused Republicans of trying to “suppress the voice of the people” ahead of the midterm elections following the court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais. “What they have done with this decision, by saying that the politics of redistricting is OK, is they are back-dooring racism through politics,” Harris said.
In response to the ruling, GOP-led states like Tennessee and Louisiana have redrawn boundaries, diluting Black voting power. To counter this, Harris suggested reforming or expanding the Supreme Court. “We’ve got to neutralize this red-state cheating,” she said. “There’s a brutality at play on the other side and a ruthlessness. And we need to play to win.”
