Authorities have located the bodies of four missing Italian divers inside an underwater cave network in the Maldives’ Vaavu Atoll, following a perilous multinational recovery mission that claimed the life of a military diver.
According to CNN, the bodies of four Italian divers missing inside a Maldives sea cave have been found, days after five Italians died exploring the Vaavu Atoll cave system.
A fifth body was recovered at the cave entrance on the day of the incident. A Maldivian military diver, Sergeant Mohamed Mahudhee, 43, also died during the recovery operation, believed to be from decompression sickness.
The victims include University of Genoa ecology professor Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, marine biologist Federico Gualtieri, and researcher Muriel Oddenino.
Chief government spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef described conditions as extremely hazardous, saying: “You have to be an expert for this level of diving.” Authorities have suspended the vessel’s licence pending investigation.
