Pope Leo launches Vatican AI commission

Pope Leo XIV has launched a Vatican commission on artificial intelligence aimed at guiding the Catholic Church’s response to the ethical and social impact of AI.

Pope Leo XIV has created a Vatican commission on artificial intelligence to coordinate the Catholic Church’s response to the rapidly growing technology.

The Vatican said the new body was established because of increasing AI use, “its potential effects on human beings and on humanity as a whole [and] the church’s concern for the dignity of every human being.”

The move comes ahead of Pope Leo’s first encyclical, expected to outline an ethics-based approach to AI within Catholic social teaching.

The pontiff has repeatedly warned about the dangers of unchecked AI development despite acknowledging its benefits.

In June 2025, he cautioned against AI being used for “selfish gain” or to “foment conflict and aggression.”

“All of us, I am sure, are concerned for children and young people,” the pope said, stressing the need to protect their development and wellbeing.
