Hundreds of residents in Kenya’s central town of Nanyuki took to the streets to protest plans for a U.S.-backed Ebola quarantine facility at the Laikipia Air Base, fearing it could put local communities at risk. According to Sahara Reporters, the demonstration comes amid growing opposition to a proposed 50-bed centre intended to house people exposed to Ebola.
Protesters blocked roads, chanted anti-Ebola slogans and demanded the project be scrapped, arguing that Kenya should not shoulder the burden of hosting foreign patients. The unrest follows a Kenyan High Court order temporarily suspending the facility after legal challenges raised concerns about public health and transparency. Reuters reports that despite assurances from authorities, many residents remain unconvinced and are pushing for the plan to be abandoned entirely.
