Burnham: I’ll call out Trump if it’s right for Britain

Andy Burnham says he would challenge Donald Trump when necessary to defend Britain’s interests, in his first major interview as prime minister.

UK PM Burnham Ready To Challenge Trump ‘If Right For Britain

Andy Burnham told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg he would be prepared to call out Donald Trump to defend Britain’s “national interest before anything else,” calling their first exchange “really warm” but declining twice to say whether he trusts the US president.

Burnham said he’d had “concern” over Trump starting the conflict with Iran and “wouldn’t hold back from saying what I think is right.” He wouldn’t commit to a date for hitting 3% GDP defence spending, saying only, “We’ve got to work out the way of doing that.”

He also ruled out an early general election before 2029, insisting: “I don’t think people want it.”
