A US federal judge has dealt a major blow to the Trump administration’s immigration policies, ordering officials to restart asylum and immigration benefit processing for thousands of affected applicants.
As The New York Times reports, Judge John McConnell Jr. ruled that measures introduced last year unlawfully halted asylum grants and froze immigration applications from people in 39 countries covered by President Donald Trump’s travel restrictions.
The judge said the policies left many immigrants trapped in legal uncertainty, unable to work, secure legal status, or plan their futures. He also criticised what he described as unequal application of immigration laws.
The ruling means affected applicants could once again pursue asylum claims, green cards, citizenship applications, and other immigration benefits, marking a significant legal setback for the administration’s immigration crackdown.
