Andy Burnham Named Labour Leader, Set To Become UK’s Next PM
Andy Burnham was installed Friday as leader of Britain’s Labour Party, the final step before King Charles III asks him Monday to form a government, according to The New York Times. He replaces outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Addressing a special Labour conference in London, the former Greater Manchester mayor called for “the courage to fix the big things that politics has neglected,” vowing to repair “an economic model that simply doesn’t work well enough for ordinary people.”
Burnham blamed Britain’s troubles partly on Margaret Thatcher-era privatization, saying the country “surrendered control of the essentials” like housing, water and energy. He admitted “this generation of politicians, myself included, have failed” the public, while pledging a pro-business, “distinctively Labour” government focused on unity.
