The Netherlands has confirmed its first euthanasia case involving a child under 12 since expanding assisted dying rules for seriously ill children, with the case now referred to prosecutors for review.
A first for the Netherlands — and a sobering one. Dutch health minister Sophie Hermans has confirmed that a child under 12 was euthanised, the first such case since the country widened its assisted dying rules for seriously ill children, Daily Mail reports.
Hermans revealed the case while presenting parliament with the annual report on late-term abortions and child euthanasia. The child was seriously ill, though officials withheld further details.
Dutch law requires parental consultation, unbearable suffering and a doctor’s confirmation that recovery is impossible. The case has now gone to prosecutors, who’ll check whether those rules were properly followed.
