China-bound tanker turns back at Hormuz… Beijing warns ‘do not interfere in our affairs’

Tensions have escalated in the Middle East as the United States initiated a naval blockade of Iranian ports at the Strait of Hormuz, prompting defiant pushback from China and causing several tankers to divert course.

The United States military began enforcing a naval blockade of Iranian ports through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, a move announced by President Donald Trump following the collapse of high-stakes diplomatic talks with Tehran. U.S. Central Command (Centcom) confirmed the blockade targets all vessels entering or exiting Iranian ports and will be “enforced impartially against vessels of all nations.” While the military stated that neutral transit to non-Iranian destinations would not be impeded, officials warned that such vessels remain subject to search for contraband and that unauthorized ships face “interception, diversion, and capture.”

The enforcement has already disrupted maritime traffic, with tracking data from MarineTraffic showing at least two tankers, including the China-bound Rich Starry, reversing course shortly after the restrictions took effect. Conversely, Bloomberg reported that three tankers—the New Future, the Auroura, and the NV Sunshine—successfully navigated the waterway, with some following specific routes south of Iran’s Larak island. The Strait remains a vital artery for global energy, particularly for Beijing, which relies on the corridor for approximately 40 percent of its oil and 30 percent of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) requirements.

China has responded to the naval blockade with a stern warning against external interference in its regional trade. Defense Minister Dong Jun affirmed that Chinese vessels would continue their operations, asserting that Iran maintains control over the waterway. Minister Dong stated, “Our ships are moving in and out of the waters of the Strait of Hormuz. We have trade and energy agreements with Iran. We will respect and honour those agreements and expect others not to interfere in our affairs.” As the blockade continues, the international community remains on high alert for immediate implications on global energy security and market stability.
