Chinese-owned tanker struck near Hormuz as US suspends ship-protection plan

A Chinese-owned tanker was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz as maritime tensions and disrupted shipping escalate amid the Iran conflict and shifting U.S. response plans.

A Chinese-owned oil products tanker was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, according to Chinese media outlet Caixin, as regional maritime tensions escalated amid the Iran conflict. The vessel reportedly caught fire on deck and was marked “CHINA OWNER & CREW,” though crew conditions remain unclear.

The incident occurred off the United Arab Emirates coast near Mina Saqr. Maritime sources identified the ship as the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker JV Innovation, which had reported a deck fire.

The attack came as President Donald Trump briefly launched and then suspended a U.S. plan to assist stranded vessels in the Gulf. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains heavily disrupted amid ongoing conflict.
