Iran has launched hundreds of missiles and suicide drones at Dubai and other Gulf cities, with explosions heard in Saudi Arabia’s capital, as its massive retaliation continues following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint U.S.-Israeli strikes. An intercepted Iranian drone reportedly caused a minor fire on the Burj Al Arab’s outer facade, while one of the berths at Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port also caught fire because of debris resulting from an aerial interception. Dubai International Airport left four staff injured, and authorities in Abu Dhabi reported an interception of a drone that targeted Zayed International airport, killing an Asian national and leaving seven injured
The UAE’s Ministry of Defence said that, as of late last night, 137 ballistic missiles had been launched by Iran towards the Emirates, of which 132 had been destroyed by air defences and five fell into the Persian Gulf.
It said it had also been targeted by 209 suicide drones, of which 195 were intercepted and 14 got through – with some making contact.
The Crowne Plaza hotel in Bahrain was smoldering this morning, with its owners reporting it had suffered an ‘incident’ but that all guests and staff were safe.
Bahrain’s air defenses responded overnight to ‘hostile Iranian missile attacks’, intercepting at least 45 missiles and nine drones, state media reported this morning.
Saudi Arabia said Iran targeted its capital and eastern region in an attack that was repelled and Jordan said it “dealt with” 49 drones and ballistic missiles. The revenge strikes follow confirmation that Khamenei had been killed by the strikes, along with several family members and high-level military leaders. Many of the Iranian attacks since Saturday have struck civilian infrastructure in the Gulf, including airports in Dubai and Kuwait, hotels and other buildings.
