Court jails Ex-Scottish National Party chief for £400,000 embezzlement

Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison for embezzling over £400,000 from the party, capping the long-running Operation Branchform probe.

Peter Murrell’s fall from grace is complete. The former SNP chief executive has been jailed for five years and three months after admitting he siphoned off more than £400,000 from the party between 2010 and 2022, according to Sahara reporters.

Handing down sentence at Edinburgh’s High Court, Lord Young said the term should serve as a warning to any senior official tempted to abuse their position for personal gain.

Police Scotland’s Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Houston didn’t pull punches either, branding Murrell’s conduct deliberate and calculated, and insisting no one is above the law.

The case has reignited scrutiny of the SNP’s internal culture, with former MP Joanna Cherry renewing calls for an independent inquiry into the party’s governance.
