An elderly motorist was filmed sleeping behind the wheel of a Tesla Cybertruck on a California highway, highlighting a growing trend of drivers violating safety laws by abusing autonomous driving features.
An elderly driver has been captured on camera fast asleep behind the wheel of a Tesla Cybertruck as it barreled down California’s Highway 101 in Marin County. Footage posted to social media showed the unidentified motorist completely dozing off while the electric vehicle appeared to be operating in an autonomous mode.
The vehicle is equipped with Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” system, which handles steering and lane changes but legally requires drivers to remain fully alert. The vehicle’s official manual notes: “Remain attentive, be mindful of road conditions and surrounding traffic, pay attention to pedestrians and cyclists, and always be prepared to take immediate action.”
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reiterated that sleeping while operating any autonomous vehicle violates the state’s basic speed law. Law enforcement officials warned that drivers remain legally responsible for their vehicle regardless of autopilot capabilities.
