Election denier Tina Peters will get clemency after admitting she ‘made a mistake,’ Colorado’s Democratic governor says

Colorado Governor Jared Polis has granted clemency to imprisoned former election clerk Tina Peters after she admitted to misleading officials, cutting her sentence in half for a potential release within a month.

Colorado’s Democratic Governor Jared Polis has granted clemency to Republican former election clerk Tina Peters, cutting her sentence to 4.5 years. According to CNN, the decision followed a previously unreleased statement where Peters acknowledged for the first time that she “made a mistake” and “misled” election officials when allowing unauthorized access to voting equipment.

Polis cited a recent appeals court ruling regarding Peters’ First Amendment rights, warning Democrats against abandoning free speech principles for political expediency. “I hope that she’s no longer a martyr, that she is just another person who believes in conspiracies on the street after this,” Polis told CNN.

The move marks a victory for Donald Trump, who privately pressured Polis. However, the commutation is not a pardon; Peters remains a convicted felon. She could be paroled within a month.
