Hackers have breached tank readers at US gas stations; officials suspect Iran is responsible

US officials suspect Iranian hackers are behind a series of unprotected fuel tank monitoring system breaches across multiple states, raising domestic security concerns amid the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran.

US officials suspect Iranian hackers are behind a series of cyber intrusions targeting fuel tank monitoring systems at gas stations across multiple states. According to CNN, the hackers exploited online automatic tank gauge (ATG) systems that were left unprotected by passwords, allowing them to manipulate display readings.

While the breaches caused no physical damage, experts warn that compromised ATGs could theoretically mask dangerous fuel leaks. The lack of forensic evidence complicates definitive attribution, but Iran remains the prime suspect due to its history of targeting US critical infrastructure.

Amid the ongoing war, tech analysts warn that Tehran’s cyber operations are rapidly evolving. PwC threat intelligence director Allison Wikoff told CNN that Iran’s tactics “are now accelerating with faster iteration, more layered hacktivist personas, and likely AI-driven scaling for reconnaissance and phishing.”
