EU lawmakers have called for a “youth mode” that disables addictive features and targeted advertising for children on social media platforms.
EU Lawmakers Push For “Youth Mode” To Curb Social Media Addiction
EU lawmakers are demanding a “youth mode” on social media platforms to shut off addictive features and targeted ads for children, according to Punch Newspapers.
An expert report also recommended a “safety-by-design” approach, restricting social media for children under 13 unless supervised by adults. Lawmaker Sandro Ruotolo said platform designers must bear responsibility for child safety, while the parliament’s culture committee called for an EU code of conduct regulating influencers.
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen backed the under-13 restrictions, promising a legal proposal after the summer break. The EU has already pressured Facebook, Instagram and TikTok to drop addictive design features in recent months.
