Falkland Islanders are throwing their support behind Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final, furious at Argentina after players unfurled a “The Falklands are Argentine” banner following their semi-final win over England.
Falkland Islanders Back Spain to Beat “Bullies” Argentina
Football rivalry just collided with old wounds. Falkland Islanders say they’re backing Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final, hoping Argentina gets “beaten just as badly” as in the 1982 war, according to The Telegraph.
The anger followed a banner Argentina’s players unfurled reading “The Falklands are Argentine” after beating England 2-1 in the semi-final. Charles Dickson, who lived through the invasion as a child, said he’d be cheering for Spain despite having no real interest in football.
June McMullen, held captive for 29 days during the conflict, called Argentina’s conduct “disgusting” and accused FIFA of being “toothless.” Downing Street backed possible FIFA action, while Argentina’s president Javier Milei defended the players’ gesture as “understandable.”
