David Morens, a longtime senior advisor to Dr. Anthony Fauci, has been indicted on federal charges alleging he used private emails to hide COVID-related communications from public disclosure while shaping the narrative around the virus’s origins.
A senior advisor to former NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci is facing serious federal charges over an alleged conspiracy to conceal critical COVID-19 communications from public view.
David M. Morens, 78, was indicted Tuesday after prosecutors accused him of deliberately routing sensitive government discussions through private email accounts to evade Freedom of Information Act requests. The communications allegedly covered COVID research, funding decisions, and internal messaging around the virus’s origins — including ties to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Prosecutors further allege that Morens helped shape public narrative on COVID’s origins while receiving gifts — including wine and high-end meals — from a collaborator. He allegedly later supported a scientific publication favouring the natural origins theory, which critics view as a conflict of interest.
Morens had previously faced congressional scrutiny over his emails, telling lawmakers he regretted the tone of certain messages and describing some as “black humor.”
The charges include conspiracy, destruction and concealment of federal records, and related offences. Morens faces decades in prison if convicted.
The case is expected to reignite fierce debate over how federal health officials managed pandemic-era transparency — and what the public was never meant to know.
