The mayor of Cohutta, Georgia, Ron Shinnick, has dissolved the town’s police department and fired all 10 officers following a dispute involving comments about his wife on Facebook. The controversy began after officers complained that Pam Shinnick, previously fired as town clerk for allegedly creating a “hostile work environment,” still had access to sensitive town information. Despite assurances from the town attorney that jobs were safe, officers were dismissed days later.
A notice posted at the station read, “The PD has been dissolved, and all personnel have been terminated.” Former Sgt. Jeremy May accused the mayor of acting out of personal revenge, saying, “We took a stand for transparency, and in result, every one of them has lost their jobs.” The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office will now oversee policing in the town of fewer than 1,000 residents.
