A gunman killed at least five people and took several hostages at a Kyiv supermarket on Saturday before being eliminated by Ukrainian special forces during a high-stakes arrest attempt.
A violent shooting spree in Kyiv’s southern Holosiivskyi district left at least five people dead and ten others hospitalized on Saturday. The incident began in a residential area, where footage appeared to show a gunman firing at a civilian from close range near a block of flats. The suspect then moved to a local supermarket, where he took several individuals hostage as gunshots continued to ring out, prompting a massive response from Ukrainian police special forces.
The standoff ended when the assailant was killed by authorities during an attempt to take him into custody. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the conclusion of the operation on social media, stating, “The attacker in Kyiv who opened fire on civilians has been eliminated.” He also offered his “condolences to the families and loved ones” of those killed in the attack. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that while the scene was chaotic, “Four hostages have been rescued” following the intervention of the specialized units.
The motive behind the deadly assault remains unclear as investigators work to process the scene in the residential district. President Zelensky noted that “all the circumstances are being established” and has called for “a swift investigation” into the tragedy. This rare act of domestic violence in the capital has left the community in shock, with officials focused on identifying the victims and providing support to the ten survivors currently being treated for wounds and trauma.
