Iran considers charging ships transit fees in Strait of Hormuz

Iran is considering legislation to impose transit fees on ships using the Strait of Hormuz, potentially leveraging control of the key global energy route amid escalating regional tensions.

Iran is considering imposing transit fees on vessels passing through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to a lawmaker cited by Reuters.

The proposal comes amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel, during which Tehran has disrupted maritime traffic it says is linked to its adversaries and their allies.

Iranian Students’ News Agency reported that parliament is reviewing a bill requiring countries using the strait for shipping, energy transit and food supplies to pay tolls and taxes. An adviser to Iran’s supreme leader said “a new regime for the Strait of Hormuz” could emerge after the war, adding, “By using the strategic position of the Strait of Hormuz, we can sanction (the West) and prevent their ships from passing through this waterway.”
