Iranian state television has reported the country’s newly installed supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded during the ongoing conflict.
Iranian state television formally announced the ascension of Mojtaba Khamenei as the nation’s new Supreme Leader on Monday, March 9, 2026, while concurrently referring to the secretive 56-year-old cleric as “janbaz,” a Persian term signifying one wounded by the enemy. Broadcasters framed his appointment within the context of the ongoing “Ramadan war” the domestic name for the current military conflict with the United States and Israel but did not provide specific details regarding the timing or severity of his injuries.
The report comes amid significant regional volatility following the February 28 joint airstrike in Tehran that killed Mojtaba’s father, the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as his wife and mother. Despite being named the country’s highest authority, Mojtaba Khamenei has not made a public appearance since the war began, leading to a state TV analyst’s later attempt to clarify that the injury reference could also relate to his service during the 1980s Iran-Iraq War.
