Major UK airport workers set to strike, threatening travel during World Cup

Nearly 700 airport workers at Edinburgh and Glasgow have voted for strike action expected to coincide with both the 2026 World Cup and the Commonwealth Games, threatening travel disruption during the peak summer season.

Almost 700 airport workers at Edinburgh and Glasgow airports have backed strike action set to cause significant disruption during the World Cup and Commonwealth Games this summer, Unite the union has announced.

Strike dates are expected to be confirmed in the coming days, with industrial action anticipated to run across both major events, Unite said.

The strikes threaten to create significant travel chaos at two of Scotland’s busiest airports during what is expected to be one of the busiest summers in recent memory, with fans travelling for the World Cup and athletes and visitors heading to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games.

The announcement comes as airports across the UK brace for a surge in passenger numbers during the peak summer holiday season.
