A masked vigilante dubbed Mexico’s “Batman” has been tying alleged bike thieves to lamp posts with “ratero” written on their foreheads, prompting a police investigation in Jalisco state.

Mexico’s Vigilante “Batman” Hunts Down Bike Thieves, Ties Them to Lamp Posts

Police in Jalisco are hunting a suspect after at least five men were found bound to lamp posts with “ratero,” Spanish for “thief,” scrawled on their foreheads, the Telegraph reports. Some had cat whiskers and moustaches drawn on their faces, mouths taped shut, with warning signs and the allegedly stolen bicycles placed beside them.

The first case surfaced in Lagos de Moreno on June 13, with four more following in near-identical fashion. Several victims showed signs of beatings, including cuts and bruises. Journalist Luis Cardenes nicknamed the culprit the “Batman of Lagos de Moreno,” with local media suggesting frustration over inadequate policing drove the vigilante action.

State security secretary Juan Pablo Hernández confirmed five recorded incidents, while prosecutor Salvador González de los Santos said investigations were ongoing. Authorities stressed the bound men remain victims for now, as no arrests have been made.
