Oil spills from the Iran war are visible from space

Recent military strikes in the Persian Gulf have triggered massive oil spills visible from space, threatening the region’s fragile marine biodiversity and the water security of 100 million people.

Satellite imagery has revealed massive oil spills spreading across the Persian Gulf following a series of military strikes between Iranian and US-Israeli forces, prompting experts to warn of an imminent ecological disaster. Significant slicks have been detected near Iran’s Qeshm and Lavan Islands the latter described by Wim Zwijnenburg of PAX as a “major environmental emergency” with pollution now “reaching the Shidvar Island… which is a protected site” known for its coral reefs and endangered wildlife.

Beyond the threat to marine biodiversity, the spills jeopardize the livelihoods of coastal fishing communities and the desalination plants providing fresh water to nearly 100 million people, while Greenpeace’s Nina Noelle notes that the damage is “affecting the entire ecosystem, from microorganisms to fish, birds, and marine turtles that depend on mangrove habitats.” Cleanup efforts remain stalled due to the “structural complexity, limited accessibility and challenging working conditions” created by the ongoing regional conflict, leaving billions of liters of crude oil aboard nearby tankers at continued risk.
