OpenAI has published a new mission statement in which chief executive Sam Altman outlined five principles for achieving artificial general intelligence while ensuring it benefits humanity.
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has released an updated mission statement detailing how the company plans to achieve artificial general intelligence, or AGI. The 1,100-word document sets out five principles focused on democratisation, user empowerment, safety resilience, corporate adaptability and “universal prosperity” through expanded AI infrastructure.
Altman said future power could either remain with a small number of firms controlling superintelligence or be distributed more widely among individuals. “We believe the latter is much better, and our goal is to put truly general AI in the hands of as many people as possible,” he wrote.
The announcement came days after OpenAI introduced GPT-5.5, which it described as a “new class of intelligence.” The model is designed to perform tasks such as research and data analysis with limited guidance. Some early users said the system appears to be approaching human-level AI capabilities.
