Prosecutors have revealed a disturbing alleged motive behind the catastrophic Palisades Fire, claiming suspect Jonathan Rinderknecht, 30, started the blaze driven by intense resentment towards wealthy California residents.
According to a trial memorandum, Rinderknecht allegedly told investigators that someone might start such a fire “out of resentment of the rich enjoying their money,” comparing wealthy individuals to enslavers. Uber passengers described him as angry and erratic on New Year’s Eve 2024, ranting about capitalism and vigilantism.
Prosecutors also revealed Rinderknecht was allegedly fixated on Luigi Mangione, the suspected murderer accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, having searched online for phrases including “lets take down all the billionaires.”
The fire killed 12 people, destroyed over 6,800 structures and razed more than 23,400 acres in January 2025. Rinderknecht pleaded not guilty and faces trial on June 8, with a potential 45-year prison sentence if convicted.
If prosecutors prove class resentment was the motive, what does that say about growing wealth inequality in America and could it inspire copycat acts of destruction?
