South African World Cup midfielder Jayden Adams has died at 25, just weeks after helping his country reach the knockout stages for the first time.
Bafana Bafana Star Jayden Adams Dies at 25
Football has lost one of its brightest young talents. According to CNN, South Africa’s sports ministry confirmed the death of midfielder Jayden Adams on Saturday, with no cause given. The 25-year-old started Bafana Bafana’s Group A matches against Mexico and the Czech Republic, and came off the bench in the historic 1-0 win over South Korea that sent South Africa into the knockouts for the first time — where they fell to Canada.
Adams played through personal tragedy during the tournament, coming off at halftime against the Czechs the day after his grandmother died. At club level, he helped Mamelodi Sundowns win the African Champions League title in the 2025/26 season.
Tributes poured in swiftly. The South African Football Players’ Union called him “a gifted player, a proud servant of the game.” Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said the nation mourns “alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters.” FIFA president Gianni Infantino also extended condolences via Instagram.
Adams rose through Stellenbosch FC’s youth ranks before joining Sundowns in 2025, earning 13 international caps and scoring twice — both in World Cup qualifiers.
