Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has been ordered to stand trial on corruption charges and barred from leaving Spain pending the case.
Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, must stand trial on corruption charges and has been barred from leaving Spain, a court ruled on Saturday.
Investigating judge Juan Carlos Peinado ordered Gómez to surrender her passport, report to court twice a month and remain in the country while the case proceeds. She’s accused of using her position as the prime minister’s wife to help secure work contracts — allegations she strongly denies.
The case, brought by far-right groups, piles more political pressure on Sánchez as other corruption probes involving his allies edge closer to trial. Sánchez hasn’t been accused of wrongdoing and insists the investigations are a campaign to push him out of office, according to Reuters.
