Starmer faces resignation calls over Mandelson vetting scandal

Keir Starmer is under renewed political pressure as the Mandelson vetting scandal sparks fresh resignation calls and deepens scrutiny of his leadership.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing renewed calls to resign after revelations that his former ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, failed security vetting but was still appointed.

The government confirmed Mandelson was later dismissed after Starmer said he had misled officials about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, while officials insist the Prime Minister was unaware the vetting recommendation had been overruled.

Opposition leaders, including Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey, accused Starmer of responsibility, with Davey saying, “I don’t think the prime minister can get out of his responsibility by sacking Olly Robbins… the buck has to stop with Mr. Starmer.”

Senior minister Darren Jones defended Starmer, saying he was “furious” and had not misled Parliament, though pressure continues as Mandelson faces separate police scrutiny over alleged document leaks linked to Jeffrey Epstein.
