The Trump administration revisits the Russia scandal

In the wake of Robert Mueller’s death, the Trump administration has ramped up a retaliatory legal campaign against those who led the Russia investigation, installing loyalist leadership at the Justice Department to pursue high-profile prosecutions and settlements.

Following the death of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the Trump administration has intensified its efforts to prosecute figures involved in the Russia investigation, recently appointing veteran prosecutor Joe diGenova as Counselor to the Attorney General to spearhead these inquiries. Under the leadership of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche who assumed the role after the April 2026 ouster of Pam Bondi the Justice Department has moved swiftly to reach multi-million dollar settlements with former targets like Carter Page and Mike Flynn, while simultaneously accelerating potential charges against vocal critics such as former CIA Director John Brennan.

White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson characterized the initiative as a necessary reckoning, stating, “The Russia Hoax was one of the greatest political scandals in American history and a clear attempt to subvert the will of the American people. The American people should always remember every single person who was involved in this sick hoax, including many in the mainstream media who uncritically amplified the Democrats’ perverse narrative.” Despite a recent slowing of grand jury activity in Washington, D.C., Blanche has signaled a continued commitment to the mission, recently posting a social media photo with diGenova captioned, “Welcome to the fight, Joe!” while the administration continues to press for broader surveillance oversight and the prosecution of former FBI Director James Comey.
