Top UK minister resigns, blasts Starmer’s leadership

British Health Secretary Wes Streeting has resigned from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government, citing a loss of confidence in the Labour leader amid growing party unrest.

Wes Streeting has resigned as Britain’s health secretary, saying he has “lost confidence” in Prime Minister Keir Starmer and could no longer remain in government.

In his resignation letter on Thursday, Streeting described staying in office as “dishonourable and unprincipled” amid mounting criticism of Starmer’s leadership following Labour’s poor performance in recent local elections.

The resignation comes as nearly 90 Labour lawmakers publicly call for Starmer to step down. Streeting, however, stopped short of officially launching a leadership challenge against the prime minister.

“Where we need vision, we have a vacuum. Where we need direction, we have drift,” Streeting wrote.

Despite the political turmoil, newly released government data showed NHS waiting lists fell by 110,000 in March, marking the largest monthly drop outside the Covid-19 pandemic since 2008 under Streeting’s leadership.

Downing Street has insisted Starmer has no plans to resign.
