President Donald Trump has departed Beijing after a two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping that stabilized US-China relations but left major issues including Iran, Taiwan and trade deals largely unresolved.
According to CNN, President Donald Trump has left Beijing following a two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping that produced warm optics but few concrete outcomes on pressing global issues.
Trump said: “We’ve settled a lot of different problems that other people wouldn’t have been able to settle, and the relationship is a very strong one.”
The leaders discussed Iran, Taiwan and trade during intensive bilateral meetings. On Iran, Trump told Fox News that Xi pledged not to provide Tehran with military equipment, saying: “Look, he’s not coming in with guns…not coming in shooting. He’s been very good.”
On Taiwan, Xi issued a direct warning, saying: “If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy.”
Trump announced China agreed to purchase 200 Boeing jets, though CNN noted China had yet to confirm specific deals.
