Trump plan would hike citizenship fees by $570

The Trump administration has proposed nearly doubling U.S. citizenship application fees while scrapping waivers for low-income applicants.

Becoming a U.S. citizen is about to get a lot more expensive — if a new proposal goes through. According to CBS News, the Trump administration wants to raise naturalization fees from $760 to $1,330 for paper applications, and from $710 to $1,280 online. Fee waivers and discounts for low-income immigrants would disappear entirely, though military members would still catch a break.

DHS says the hikes are about covering real processing costs and funding tougher vetting — not punishing applicants. Critics see it differently, warning the price jump could lock out immigrants who can least afford it.

The plan now faces a 60-day public comment window before anything is finalized, CBS News reports.
