Trump says China agrees not to send Iran weapons — hopes to get a ‘big, fat hug’ from Xi Jinping

Donald Trump says China has agreed not to supply weapons to Iran and predicts President Xi Jinping will give him a “big, fat, hug” at their upcoming meeting.

US President Donald Trump has said China agreed not to supply weapons to Iran, amid tensions over the ongoing Middle East conflict. Speaking ahead of talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Trump stated, “They have agreed not to send weapons to Iran,” adding that Xi “will give me a big, fat, hug” during their meeting in Beijing next month.

Trump also claimed China supports his move to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, saying, “China is very happy that I am permanently opening the Strait of Hormuz.” However, Beijing has criticised the US blockade as “dangerous and irresponsible,” warning it could escalate tensions and threaten global shipping routes.

The remarks come as US intelligence reports suggest China had considered sending air defence systems to Iran. Trump insisted diplomatic engagement remains key, saying, “Doesn’t that beat fighting???” while noting military strength remains an option. The leaders are expected to meet May 14–15, as efforts to resolve the Iran conflict continue.
