A dramatic shift in the U.S. immigration landscape has seen thousands of migrants opting to leave the country voluntarily rather than continue their legal fights for asylum. According to a Times of India report, immigration judges issued over 80,000 voluntary departure orders between January 2025 and March 2026, a massive increase from the 11,400 recorded in a previous similar period.
The surge is driven by aggressive enforcement and the prospect of being deported to third countries that migrants have never visited. Many individuals, exhausted by months in custody, have reportedly stated, “I’d rather die in my country” than remain in U.S. detention. While this path avoids a formal deportation order, it requires the total surrender of all active asylum protections.
