France hits an all-time temperature high as a brutal heatwave triggers deadly drownings and shuts down major attractions.
France records hottest day ever as heatwave kills 40
France just made grim history. The country recorded its hottest day since records began in 1947, with temperatures topping 40C and 40 people dying in drowning incidents nationwide.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu called it an “episode of exceptional intensity.” Météo-France logged 44.3C in Pissos and 42.1C in Bordeaux, with overnight temperatures also smashing records.
The heat has thrown daily life into chaos — schools shut, and the Eiffel Tower and Louvre cut their hours. Paris-area residents were urged to work from home.
The Guardian reports 54 departments are under red alert, with Saharan hot air blamed — and worse could still be coming.
