Authorities regained control of a North Carolina detention center after roughly 80 inmates overpowered guards, briefly took two officers captive, and seized parts of the facility before a tense standoff ended peacefully.
Chaos broke out before dawn Monday at the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center in Windsor, North Carolina, according to CNN, citing the Associated Press. Around 5 a.m., about 80 of the 88 inmates housed there overpowered guards, taking two captive while a third escaped, triggering a scramble of local, state and federal responders.
Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said negotiations secured the safe release of both guards and 80 inmates, leaving eight still inside before officers moved in. By early afternoon, the State Bureau of Investigation and FBI had cleared the building. All inmates and staff were accounted for, injured personnel were treated, and inmates were relocated as officials assess the damage.
