Chinese authorities have held talks with top tech firms, including Alibaba, ByteDance and Z.ai, over potentially restricting overseas access to the country’s most advanced AI models, citing national security concerns.

CHINA MOVES TO RESTRICT GLOBAL ACCESS TO ITS TOP AI MODELS

Chinese authorities have held meetings with leading technology firms over the past month to discuss restricting overseas access to the country’s most advanced AI models, including unreleased ones, Nairametrics reports.

The talks, led by China’s Ministry of Commerce, involved Alibaba, ByteDance and AI startup Z.ai. Sources said officials discussed limits on both closed-source and open-source models, and considered making leaks of proprietary AI technology an offence under national security law. Authorities also weighed restricting foreign funding into domestic AI startups.

It remains unclear when or whether the restrictions will take effect, with some sources suggesting they may apply only to future models. The move mirrors similar US export restrictions on advanced AI technology and follows Anthropic’s earlier suspension of its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models under a US directive.
