Kemi Badenoch has urged the Labour government to maintain its proposed 10-year qualifying period for permanent settlement, warning against exempting migrants who entered the UK on work visas since 2021.
Badenoch Tells Labour: Work Visa Holders Shouldn’t Stay In UK Forever
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has called on Labour to stick with its proposed 10-year qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain, according to Leadership Newspapers.
In a letter to the Home Secretary, co-signed with Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp, Badenoch criticised reports that some Labour MPs want to exempt roughly two million migrants who arrived on work visas since 2021 from the reforms, calling it “a grave mistake.”
She argued migrants not making significant economic contributions over ten years should return home when their visas expire, adding that granting settlement after five years strains Britain’s welfare system. Badenoch pledged Conservative support if Labour introduces its original proposals without dilution.
