Phones, power banks and vapes are increasingly catching fire on planes, injuring passengers and forcing emergency landings, according to a new report.
Devices Catching Fire Mid-Flight Pose Growing Risk
In one incident, a phone and power bank in a passenger’s lap burst into flames minutes after Alaska Airlines Flight 2117 took off, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The fire burned the passenger’s arms and legs before she threw the devices into the aisle, where flight attendants contained the blaze in a fireproof bag.
Pilots declared an emergency, deployed oxygen masks and diverted the flight back to Wichita, Kansas. The incident reflects a broader pattern of lithium battery-related fires disrupting flights and injuring passengers across the industry.
