The Vatican has removed bishop Emanuel Hana Shaleta after allegations he embezzled church funds and faced multiple financial crime charges.
The Vatican has removed California-based bishop Emanuel Hana Shaleta from his position after accepting his resignation amid allegations he diverted more than $250,000 from church funds. The decision was approved by Pope Leo XIV, following Shaleta’s arrest at San Diego International Airport while travelling with over $9,000 in cash.
Authorities said the former head of the Eparchy of Saint Peter the Apostle of San Diego of the Chaldeans faces 15 felony charges including embezzlement and money laundering. Investigators also alleged he spent time at a brothel in Tijuana, though Shaleta has denied all accusations and insisted he never used church donations for personal purposes.
