A Maldivian rescue diver has died while searching for the bodies of four Italians killed in a scuba diving accident in underwater caves, deepening a tragedy that has now claimed six lives.
A rescue diver has died while searching for the bodies of four Italians who drowned during a cave scuba diving accident in the Maldives, a government spokesman confirmed to the BBC on Saturday.
Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahdhee was rushed to hospital in critical condition after diving during the search and rescue operation, but later succumbed to his injuries.
The original accident involved five Italians attempting to explore underwater caves at a depth of approximately 50 metres. Only one body is believed to have been recovered so far, found in a cave at roughly 60 metres depth.
The incident has now claimed six lives in total, casting a shadow over one of the world’s most popular diving destinations and raising serious questions about the safety of deep cave diving operations in the region.
